Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help: History, Meaning, and Prayer

A complete guide to the liturgical feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. History of the Byzantine icon, theological meaning, liturgy, and traditional prayers.

On June 27, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, one of the most widely venerated Marian devotions. Its history is tied to a miraculous 15th-century Byzantine icon, officially guarded by the Redemptorist Fathers in Rome.

Historical Context and Origins

The origin of this devotion is intimately linked to the sacred painting we venerate today. Painted on wood on the island of Crete between the 13th and 14th centuries, the icon was brought to Rome by a merchant who survived a violent storm at sea after praying before the image.

Following a series of events and mystical apparitions to a young girl in the merchant’s family, the icon was solemnly enthroned in the Church of St. Matthew on March 27, 1499. It remained there for three centuries under the care of the Augustinian Friars. After the French occupation and the destruction of the temple in 1798, the icon was hidden. In 1866, Pope Pius IX entrusted the icon to the Redemptorist Congregation with the famous apostolic mandate to “Make her known to all the world.”

Theology and Spiritual Meaning

Theologically, the devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help highlights Mary’s maternal and mediative role in the divine plan of salvation, as expressed in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (n. 969): “Therefore the Blessed Virgin is invoked in the Church under the titles of Advocate, Helper, Benefactress, and Mediatrix.”

Furthermore, in his encyclical Redemptoris Mater (n. 38), St. John Paul II emphasizes that Mary’s maternal help flows from Christ’s own love: “Mary’s mediation is intimately linked with her motherhood. It possesses a specifically maternal character, which distinguishes it from the mediation of the other creatures.” She protects us perpetually, guiding us to the feet of the Crucified.

Symbolism and Iconography

The painting of Perpetual Help is famous for its rich Byzantine iconography, which serves as a visual catechism:

  • The Flight of Jesus: The Child Jesus contemplates the instruments of death presented by the archangels and, frightened, runs to hold His Mother’s hand.
  • The Falling Sandal: Symbolizes Christ’s sacred humanity. Frightened by the vision of the Passion, He runs to His Mother, causing His sandal to slip off and hang by a single thread.
  • The Archangels and the Passion: In the upper corners, Archangels Michael and Gabriel hold the cross, nails, lance, and sponge with respect and veiled hands.
  • The Golden Background: Represents eternity, divinity, and the uncreated light of Heaven, placing the Virgin and Child outside of earthly time.

Liturgy and Traditions of the Celebration

The liturgical feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help on June 27 features its own liturgical conmemorations. In the Mass, the gospel of St. John (Jn 19:25-27) is proclaimed, where Christ on the cross entrusts His Mother to the beloved disciple, giving her as a protective Mother to the Church.

At the popular level, this feast is preceded by a Solemn Novena (June 18-26), during which faithful pray devotions, walk in processions, and sing traditional hymns of praise to the Virgin Mary, particularly at the Church of St. Alphonsus Liguori in Rome.

Resources for the Faithful: Prayers and Litanies

Collect of the Day (Roman Missal)

“O Lord Jesus Christ, who hast given us Thy Mother Mary, whose renowned image we venerate, to be a Mother ever ready to help us, grant, we beseech Thee, that we who implore her maternal aid may be found worthy to enjoy the fruits of Thy redemption forever. Who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without world. Amen.”

Prayer of Petition in Times of Need

“O Mother of Perpetual Help, with the greatest confidence I come before your sacred image today. I implore your help in my necessities. You who behold the suffering of your Divine Son as he seeks refuge in your arms, look upon my pain with compassion. Mother, intercede for the grace I ask of you today.
