Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is one of the deepest and most widespread spiritual expressions in the Catholic Church. It represents the infinite, merciful, and suffering love of Christ for humanity, inviting us to make reparation for the offenses committed against His divine love.
The 12 Promises of Christ to Humanity
In the 17th century, in Paray-le-Monial (France), the Lord revealed Himself to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, entrusting her with twelve promises of grace and comfort for those who venerate the image of His Sacred Heart:
- I will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life.
- I will establish peace in their homes.
- I will comfort them in all their afflictions.
- I will be their secure refuge during life, and above all, in death.
- I will bestow abundant blessings upon all their undertakings.
- Sinners shall find in My Heart the source and the infinite ocean of mercy.
- Tepid souls shall become fervent.
- Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection.
- I will bless every place where an image of My Heart shall be exposed and honored.
- I will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts.
- Those who shall promote this devotion shall have their names written in My Heart.
- I promise you in the excessive mercy of My Heart that My all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the First Fridays in nine consecutive months the grace of final perseverance.
“Behold this Heart which has so loved men that it has spared nothing, even to exhausting and consuming itself, in order to testify its love.” — Revelation of Jesus to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque
How to Pray the Novena to the Sacred Heart
The traditional novena is prayed especially in June (the month of the Sacred Heart) in preparation for its liturgical solemnity. Each day, an act of personal consecration is made, meditations on the love of Christ are read, and the Prayer of Confidence is offered to repair the indifference shown to the Divine Heart.
