On July 25, the Church celebrates the Feast of Saint James the Greater, one of the three closest Apostles to Jesus. Known as the “Son of Thunder”, he was the first Apostle to be martyred for the faith and is deeply venerated as the patron saint of pilgrims worldwide.

The Son of Thunder

James, the son of Zebedee and the brother of Saint John, was a simple fisherman on the Sea of Galilee when Jesus called him to become a “fisher of men”.

Together with his brother John, he was given the nickname Boanerges, meaning “Sons of Thunder”, reflecting their fiery zeal and passionate temperaments. James was part of Christ’s inner circle, privileged to witness some of the most profound moments of Jesus’ earthly ministry, including the raising of Jairus’ daughter, the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor, and the Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane.

The First Apostolic Martyr

James drank the chalice of Christ’s suffering before any other Apostle.

Around 44 AD, King Herod Agrippa I, seeking to please the religious authorities and suppress the growing Christian movement, ordered James to be executed by the sword. His martyrdom is the only biblical record of an Apostle’s death (Acts 12:1-2). His readiness to lay down his life demonstrated the true meaning of his earlier claim that he could drink the cup the Lord was to drink.

The Patron of Spain and the Camino

According to ancient tradition, Saint James preached the Gospel in the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain) before his martyrdom in Jerusalem.

Legend has it that his disciples transported his body back to Spain, where it was lost and miraculously rediscovered centuries later in the 9th century. The site of his tomb, Santiago de Compostela, became one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the Christian world.

For over a millennium, millions of pilgrims have walked the Camino de Santiago (The Way of Saint James), following the scallop shell markers across Europe. The journey remains a powerful metaphor for the Christian life: a physical, spiritual, and communal pilgrimage toward the heavenly kingdom.

The Legacy of the Pilgrim Apostle

Saint James reminds us that the Christian life is a dynamic journey.

His transformation from an ambitious, thunderous fisherman to a courageous martyr who laid down his life for the Gospel challenges us to live with the same radical faith. As the patron of pilgrims, he intercedes for all those who are on the path of seeking God, offering them the strength to walk with perseverance and the courage to witness to Christ until the very end.
