Pater Noster

Our Father / The Lord's Prayer

Latin (Original)
Translation

Pater noster, qui es in caelis, sanctificetur nomen tuum.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Adveniat regnum tuum. Fiat voluntas tua, sicut in caelo et in terra.

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie.

Give us this day our daily bread.

Et dimitte nobis debita nostra, sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Et ne nos inducas in tentationem, sed libera nos a malo. Amen.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

✦ History & Origin

The Pater Noster is the preeminent Christian prayer, taught directly by Jesus Christ to His disciples when they asked Him how to pray (recorded in Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4). It represents the perfect model of petition, praise, and filial trust.

✦ Historical Insights & Trivia

✦

It is the only prayer directly given by Christ in the Gospels.

✦

In the early Church, it was kept secret from catechumens until shortly before their baptism (the 'Traditio Symboli' rite).

✦

The recitation of the Pater Noster has been part of the Roman Liturgy of the Mass since at least the 4th century.
